Only a small number of countries allow Syrian refugees to undertake short “go-and-see” visits to Syria without risking their legal status. As of July 2025, five countries (Armenia, Cyprus, France, Serbia and Slovakia) permit such visits. In several other countries, there is no clear guidance on whether short visits to Syria affect a refugee’s legal status. At the same time, more than 1.2 million refugees have voluntarily returned to Syria to date, mainly from Türkiye, Lebanon and Jordan.
