Purpose of the data collection exercise

To support Syrian refugees returning from abroad, UNHCR and its partners started conducting a data collection exercise in Aleppo for the time being, and later in other governorates, to gather basic but important information about Syrian individuals who have recently returned from abroad. This information will help UNHCR and its partners to assess their needs and vulnerabilities and support the planning and provision of appropriate assistance and available services.

1. Who is being contacted for the data collection exercise?

This exercise is, at this moment, targeting only Syrians who have returned to Syria from Türkiye after 08 December 2024. If you are not part of this group, you will not be contacted at this time.

2. If I provide my data, do I automatically receive assistance from UNHCR?

Please note that providing your data through UNHCR partners does not guarantee automatic access to any specific assistance, including cash. Only vulnerable households that meet the established eligibility criteria will be contacted

Is the cash grant for returnees only available to those who provide data to UNHCR Syria?

No. If you were Syrian refugee and resided in Jordan, Lebanon, Egypt, Iraq, or Türkiye, your family may be eligible to receive a one-time cash grant of USD 600 to support your return.

Returnees who had been registered with UNHCR in one of the mentioned hosting countries, might be contacted by UNHCR only If further update is still needed.

Can I reach UNHCR office or supported community centre directly to provide my data?

Individuals will be contacted by UNHCR partners and given a specific appointment to visit designated locations where the data collection is taking place. Please do not approach UNHCR supported community centres to provide or to update your data without an appointment, as only those with scheduled times will be received for this exercise.

3. If I do not want to participate in the data collection exercise, will this impact my access to humanitarian assistance?

Participation in this data collection exercise is completely voluntary. Choosing not to provide your information will not affect your eligibility for other humanitarian assistance or services that are available in Syria but may affect some of the assistance provided by UNHCR when data collection is a prerequisite for such assistance, including the return cash grant.
